Nobody makes baskets like Fenton! Fenton started creating baskets in the late 1930s. Attaching a basket handle requires a great deal of skill. There's less than 30 seconds to attach and shape a handle before the glass cools and is no longer workable.

In the 1950s, company President Frank M. Fenton and his brother Bill Fenton, who was Vice-President, decided that each Fenton basket handler should have a distinctive mark so collectors could identify the artisan who created their basket. Fenton Hand Painted Favrene Glass Temple Jar & Covered Box

As with many handmade glasses, Fenton's Favrene is not a recent invention. The challenges involved in creating Favrene glass limits the production numbers... adding to the rarity and collectibility of this very special glass. The Favrene batch contains Cobalt and precious metals, such as silver. This batch must be worked under exacting conditions of both heat and oxygen to coax out the silvery color. Once the base color is established, the piece is then sprayed with stannous chloride to create the nuances of color on the glass. Variations of iridescence ranging from gold to silver to blue result from this spray. Another trip to the flame creates the permanent satin finish, and our talented craftsmen use their reheating skills in this process. Fenton Glass producing great Fostoria American Pattern Vases

In 1887, L. B. Martin and W. S. Brady founded the Fostoria Glass Company in Fostoria, Ohio. When the area’s natural gas deposits ran out, Fostoria moved to Wheeling, West Virginia, and then to Moundsville, West Virginia, in 1891, where it remained until it closed in 1983. Handcrafted in our new Rose color, this 10'' American pattern vase is from a Fostoria mould c. 1915. The American line was very large with many different items and was one of their most popular lines for nearly 50 years. The American Pattern design was created at Fostoria Glass Co of Moundsville, WV. When Fostoria went out of business in the mod-1980s, Fenton acquired a number of American pattern moulds in 2003. This American Pattern vase is in Fenton's refreshing Rose Glass. Very Sad News - Fenton To Wind Down Production of Glass

The following news release from the Fenton Art Glass company is very sad news for the tons of Collectors who has supported Fenton Glass fro some many years. There will be a conference call on Thursday to provide Dealers with more information.

Williamstown-based Fenton Art Glass Company has announced plans to "wind down production of its collectible and giftware glass products."

The company cites financial challenges since its restructuring in 2007 and recent developments as factors in its decision to shut down its traditional glassmaking business.

“The market for our pressed and blown glassware has diminished,” according to Fenton President George Fenton. “We cannot sustain the overhead costs. Our employees have worked hard and efficiently, so this is a very sad day for us. Shortly, we will begin the process of shutting down our main furnace. Remaining employees will be finishing existing glassware from the company’s inventory that will be available through the Fenton Gift Shop as well as the company’s web site and Fenton dealers across the country.”

In a news release sent to WTAP-TV, Fenton Art Glass says it's exploring the sales of one or more of its product lines.

Fenton Art Glass Company's factory has been a part of Williamstown since 1906.

Cameo carving is a painstaking process. After the glass has been annealed, a special mask is taped to the surface of the glass. Using an advanced "vignetting" technique, each piece is carefully sandcarved, by hand, using aluminum oxide crystal under pressure to take away some of the surface. Great individual skill and experience are needed to control this operation, as many distinct stages of successive cameo carving are required to create the remarkable depth and the intricate details. This exquisite 9'' vase is aptly named Sunflower. The meticulous detail encircles the entire vase, which is handcrafted in Aubergine Glass cased in Milk Glass. Limited to 40 pieces. One of my favorite items from her collection is the Fenton Silent Night on Cobalt Blue Satin glass hammered colonial lamp. aside from the fact the hand painting is wonderful, the colonial style lamps are really hard to fact. This lamp is from the 1994 Christmas Collection. Designer Frances Burton has taken Cobalt Blue and created a velvety surface to showcase her beautiful scene. Using metalic paints with a soft shimmer, she has captured the stillness and clarity of a deer who has been touched by the "Star". Her design was the first edition in the Christmas Star Series. The talented artist at Fenton Art Glass start with a basic French Opalescent glass item and use a combination of airbrush and traditional painting techniques. The first steps is to airbrush a pale green background for the floral design. Next they use the traditional painting to create a floral design by Kim Barley. We just got in from a private collector a grouping of vases called "Four Seasons" was offered as a matched numbered set on the February 6 QVC show only, a maximum of 1000 matched numbered sets will be available (each vase is limited to 1500 but those beyond 1000 will not be in matched numbered sets). All four vases are blown, and all are made of Fenton glass formulas which contain gold: Burmese, Lotus Mist Burmese, Blue Burmese and Rosalene. Produced with a mould that originated at the Consolidated Glass Co. of Coraopolis, Pa., in the 1920s, this Persimmon vase has a Milk Glass interior and a layer of orange colored glass on the exterior. Skilled gatherers and glassblowers work together to be sure that the molten glass is properly prepared before blowing it to its final shape in this unusually contoured mould.

Two new Fenton Art Glass pieces have been introduced using Fostoria moulds. For the Fenton Christmas Collection you'll find a Fostoria American Pattern vase and Fostoria Sunray bowl in ruby Red glass. The 10'' footed American Vase is handcrafted in Fenton's classic Ruby glass. It really sparkles! The American pattern vase is a Fostoria mould c. 1915. American was one of their most popular lines from 40-50 years. Handcrafted in our rich Ruby glass, the Sunray bowl retains its original name and is made with a mould that originated at the Fostoria Glass Co. in Moundsville, WV.. Fenton Carved Dolphin Figurine Robin's Egg Blue

This year for the Fenton Art Glass Christmas Collection Fenton uses French Opalescent glass in a major way. French Opalescent glass with a silky smooth satin finish is the perfect canvas for an enchanting winter motif designed by Stacy Williams. The Whispering Woods collection includes a square vase, bell, basket and three collectible figurines. The square vase mould originated at Duncan-Miller in the 1920s, and we acquired it from the U.S. Glass Co. in the mid-1960s. The basket features a beautiful twisted handle. In October 1907, Fenton Art Glass Company entered the marketplace with an exciting new line of glassware called ''iridescent ware'' which featured vivid, changing metallic hues on highly-patterned pressed glassware. Stories told about how this glassware was used as midway game prizes and the phrase ''Carnival glass'' was coined. When Fenton Glass resumed production of their iridescent glass in 1970, they decided to call it "Carnival glass'' and have done so ever since. A special spray of metallic salts creates various effects on different base glass colors. Fenton Art Glass's popular Frosty Friends grouping returns for 2010 with the snowman and snowlady are all decked out for the holidays! This is the first time they have made them in Milk Glass. In prior years Fenton has used a sanded opal glass. The mould was designed by Jon Saffell and quickly became a favorite among Fenton Collectibles.
